The 2016 college season is coming to a close and on the women’s side of the ball, the California schools are climbing up the ranking ladder. Below are recaps and updated rankings from the most recent NSCAA Coaches poll.
Men’s
#12 Stanford
The Cardinal are starting to find their groove after picking up back-to-back wins over then #25 San Diego State and then #17 UCLA. Stanford is now on a five match winning streak and have outscored opponents 11-1 during than span. Against San Diego State, Foster Langsdorf scored the opening goal in just the 7th minute from a Corey Baird assist. Baird added another assist in the 64th minute when his cross was headed home by Thomas Hilliard-Acre. San Diego State got a goal back in the 75th minute. However, Stanford scored another in the 76th minute on Derek Waldeck’s first goal of the season. Against UCLA, the match was scoreless until Stanford scored three goals after the 65th minute. Sam Werner scored the opener, Tanner Beason scored the second and Adam Mosharrafa scored the third. Stanford will now face San Diego State on Thursday and UCLA on Sunday.
#24 UCLA
Up and down weekend for UCLA, who defeated California 4-3 on Thursday before suffering a 3-0 loss to Stanford on Sunday. Against California, both sides traded goals throughout the entirety of the match. Cal scored the opener before UCLA stormed back and scored goals from Brian Iloski and Seyi Adekoya. Cal converted a penalty in the 51st minute before Jason Romero extended the lead. Blayne Martinez scored the winning goal in the 89th minute. Up next for UCLA is Cal on Thursday and Stanford on Sunday.
Women’s
#3 Stanford
Stanford had their hands full this weekend in a 3-2 win over Oregon State on Friday that went down to the wire. After trading goals all match long, Stanford’s Averie Collins scored her second and match winning goals in the 89th minute. Before this, Collins scored in the first half while Andi Sullivan added her sixth goal on the season in the 77th minute. Up next for Stanford is Colorado on Thursday and Utah on Sunday.
#5 USC
In the Trojans lone match from this past weekend, they defeated ASU 2-0. Katie Johnson and Savannah Levin scored the goals in the match. Up next for USC is Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Sunday.
#10 California
It was a great weekend for Cal, who extended their undefeated streak to eight matches. In the lone match from the weekend, Cal defeated Oregon 2-0. Goals were scored by Arielle Ship and Ifeoma Onumonu. Up next for Cal is Utah on Thursday and Colorado on Sunday.
#12 UCLA
In the Bruins lone match from the weekend, they defeated the University of Arizona 2-1 in overtime. Anika Rodriguez scored the opening goal in the 6th minute and Sunny Dunphy scored the game winner in overtime. Up next for UCLA is Washington on Thursday and Washington State on Sunday.
#19 Pepperdine
Pepperdine is climbing up the rankings following another victory, which puts them on a seven match unbeaten streak. In the lone match from the weekend, Pepperdine defeated St. Mary’s 2-0 with goals from Hailey Stenberg and Rylee Baisden. Up next for Pepperdine is Santa Clara on Friday and San Francisco on Sunday.
