In near perfect weather at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center San Diego Loyal squared off against MLS side FC Dallas. Being Super Bowl Sunday you might think it would keep the supporters away. Instead, the Locals (SD Loyal’s Official Supporter Group) and season ticket holders came out to support their team and were not disappointed with the performance of their newly formed USL side.
The friendly match gave opportunity to coaches and players to see what the team would look like at this early stage. After just 12 training sessions, their first match saw the Loyal come away with the 1-0 win. The game winner came from Francis Atuahene in the second half after he received the ball near the top of the FC Dallas box. He faked right and beat the FC Dallas Defender to his left and followed that with a composed finish that proved to be the games only goal.
There were more chances earlier in the match but the Loyal were simply unable to convert the opportunities to goals. SD Loyal played with real intent, on the front foot and the players were definitely up for this game. Let’s keep in mind that this is early days and there is a long way to go to see exactly what this inaugural season will bring. FC Dallas rested most of its first team players and are also in pre-season mode.
The product on display was worthy of noting that the Club is moving forward and on track to hit the ground running as the season approaches. For all San Diegan’s that have been waiting for professional level soccer you should keep your eye on this team. If this match is any indication of things to come then there is no reason not to rally behind what is already in motion. Congratulations to the SD Loyal as the journey in season 1 gets underway.
