LA Galaxy II (11-5-3, 36 points) earned a 1-0 victory over Portland Timbers FC 2 Sunday night at Merlo Field behind a first-half goal from forward Jack McBean. The three points moves Los Dos into first place in the Western Conference standings alongside Seattle Sounders FC 2.

McBean scored the game’s decisive goal in the 15th minute of play. The Galaxy II forward got on the end of a long ball from goalkeeper Clement Diop, heading it towards fellow Academy product Jaime Villarreal. Villarreal then turned towards goal and sliced a ball through the Portland defense to find McBean, who took one touch before slotting it into the near post past Timbers FC 2 goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.

The goal was McBean’s third of the season and Villarreal’s first-ever assist for LA Galaxy II. Villarral scored his first goal of his career just two weeks ago when he opened the scoring in a 4-0 rout over Sacramento Republic FC on July 11 on the road.

McBean’s goal was enough to give Los Dos three points on the night, who have now won 11 of their last 15 USL competitions and are unbeaten in their last seven games.

Los Dos goalkeeper Clement Diop recorded his sixth shutout of the year, making four saves on the night and withstanding heavy late pressure from Portland to preserve the Galaxy II shutout. Diop is now 8-4-3 on the year when starting in the net.

The match marked the first time that Los Dos have faced the 2015 USL expansion team during their two-year history. The two sides will square off next on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at StubHub Center in their final meeting of the USL Regular Season.

Galaxy II will continue with a three-game road swing when they face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Friday, July 31 at 6 p.m. PT.
