A team always looks for a spark to set the tone for what they hope will be a successful weekend. As she has done several times this season, Shelby Lanksbury, Albion OC alumni, provided that desired stimulus for the Chico State women’s soccer team in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Humboldt State, punching home the opening goal and helping the ‘Cats stay squarely in the mix for a berth in next month’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament. Lanksbury’s key contribution to Chico State’s victory over the Lumberjacks makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.

Chico State went into Friday’s contest with Humboldt State having won just once in its last three matches, and badly in need of a victory to keep pace with the top teams in the conference. Lanksbury wasted little time in getting the ‘Cats on the scoreboard, scoring 30 minutes into the contest. The Yorba Linda native took a pass from Pooja Patel from 15 yards out and booted a rocket shot past the Lumberjackers goalkeeper, finding the back of the net just inside the far post. Lanksbury’s third goal of the season – and second game-winner – started the Wildcats on their way to the 2-0 victory.

Lanksbury, who missed Sunday’s match against Sonoma State due to injury, is tied for the team lead in goals and is ranked third in total points with seven.

The Chico State women’s soccer team is back in action this weekend, hosting Cal State East Bay Friday at University Soccer Stadium, followed by a Sunday road tilt in Turlock against Cal State Stanislaus.
