LAFC October 6, 2019: A photo album
It would have been presumptuous to assume Vela would break the MLS single-season scoring record. Last week, with one game left, Vela was tied at the top of the record chart with Josef Martinez.
It’s no surprise however, especially to LAFC fans, that Vela not only broke the record, he crushed it.
Goal 1, 28th minute
In the 28th minute, with Tim Howard off his line, Vela struck from outside the box.
And the crowd went nuts. This was the goal that broke the single-season scoring record.
But Vela wasn’t done….
Goal 2, 31st minute
As if the weight of the record had been lifted off his shoulders, Vela went airborne. In the 31st minute, with the goal to his back, the ball hovered in front of the newly minted record-holder.
Vela left his feet and rocketed a left-footed bicycle kick into the net for his second goal.
Goal 3, 51st minute
LAFC was holding onto a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute when Vela struck again. Tristan Blackmon cruised down the right side of the box and slotted in a pass for Vela. With lethal calm, Vela tucked away his third goal past Tim Howard and claimed his hat trick.
Another record: 72 points in a season
When the final whistle blew, LAFC had one more record in the books. Last season, New York Red Bulls had set the record for points in a season: 71. During the 2019 MLS season, LAFC tallied 72 points. A new record.
The crowd went bonkers, celebrating with their traditional beer showers and lifting their left shoes.
Up next: Galaxy or Minnesota
The Galaxy will travel to Minnesota. Their Oct 20th game will decide who gets to face LAFC in the Western Conference Semi-Final on October 24th.
