Monterrey has taken charge of Liga MX, Lobos BUAP earned their first loss of the season and Nico Castillo continues to easily find the back of the net.

In case you missed anything from Week 4 of Liga MX’s 2017 Apertura, here’s a quick recap of every match.

Puebla 1-1 Club Tijuana

Good news for Xolos? They were finally able to score their first goal of the Apertura. Bad news? The away side still struggled in what should have been one of the more simple games of the season. As for Puebla, things aren’t getting much better for the club that continues to remain as a strong relegation candidate.

Goalscorers: 48’ Christian Marrugo (Puebla), 57’ Gustavo Bou (Tijuana)

Atlas 0-1 Club America

Two penalties, but only one scored. While Atlas’ Milton Caraglio missed his chance in the 70th minute, America’s Oribe Peralta later clinched the victory with a late penalty in the 94th minute. The fact that Las Aguilas went down to 10 men before both opportunities added insult to injury for Atlas.

Queretaro 2-1 Morelia

So close, yet so far for Morelia. After holding onto a 1-0 lead until late into the match, Morelia later allowed two goals from Queretaro during the last 10 minutes of the clash. Los Gallos Blancos will likely feel as if the three points were justified, especially after they launched a total of 22 shots during the win.

Goalscorers: 51’ Angel Sepulveda (Morelia), 80’ Javier Guemez (Queretaro), 83’ Camilo Sanvezzo (Queretaro)

Cruz Azul 0-0 Toluca

Cruz Azul finished Saturday’s match with more possession, more shots, more passes and just as many goals as Toluca. Considering the fact that Los Diablos Rojos didn’t have a single shot on target, Toluca might feel a bit lucky to walk away with a point over the weekend.

Monterrey 4-1 Chivas

Like usual, Monterrey was dangerous off counters and efficient with its limited amount of possession. With names like Rogelio Funes Mori, Aviles Hurtado and Dorlan Pabon in the roster, Los Rayados are not only sitting in first place, but are also the early favorites for the Apertura title. As for Chivas, things gradually fell apart for the away side that initially had a brilliant start.

Goalscorers: 3’ Jair Pereira (Chivas), 5’ Celso Ortiz (Monterrey), 50’ Rogelio Funes Mori (Monterrey), 67’ Dorlan Pabon (Monterrey), 71’ Aviles Hurtado (Monterrey)

Pachuca 2-1 Tigres

As mentioned in the preview last week, Pachuca had some potential to make things difficult for Tigres. On Saturday, Los Tuzos gained their first win of the season over the league’s most talented squad. Following the loss, questions will continue to emerge for Tigres’ average start to the tournament. Is a three-man backline the right answer for the team?

Goalscorers: 10’ Angelo Sagal (Pachuca), 26’ Andre-Pierre Gignac (Tigres), 79’ Erick Gutierrez (Pachuca)

Necaxa 0-3 Leon

Welcome back, Leon. After a quiet start to the season, Los Panzas Verdes suddenly appeared to wake up over the weekend. Led by Mauro Boselli and Elias Hernandez in the attack, Leon clinched its first win of the Apertura with an impressive win over Necaxa.

Goalscorers: 46’ Jorge Pereyra (Leon), 88’ Andres Andrade (Leon), 95’ Mauro Boselli (Leon)

Pumas 2-0 Lobos BUAP

We are only four weeks into the season, but no other striker has looked more on point or lethal than Pumas’ Nicolas Castillo. The Chilean is, by far, the most important player in the roster. As long as he can avoid injuries, Pumas should be able to qualify for the playoffs.

Goalscorers: 49’ Nicolas Castillo (Pumas), 94’ Nicolas Castillo (Pumas)

Man of the match: Big surprise, it’s Nicolas Castillo!

Santos Laguna 2-3 Veracruz

One of the surprise results of the weekend. Santos were arguably the better side with more possession and opportunities on net, but struggled defensively far too often — especially when you consider that they gifted the first goal to Veracruz.

Goalscorers: 35’ Cristian Menendez (Veracruz), 57’ Jorge Enriquez (Santos), 60’ Adrian Luna (Veracruz), 65’ Christian Valdez (Veracruz), 96’ Brian Lozano (Santos)

Man of the match: Daniel Villalva (Veracruz)
