Capping a flurry of expansion activity over the past weeks, the United Soccer League announced today that it would be launching a club at Cashman Field in Las Vegas next season.
The unnamed club is headed by owner Brett Lashbrook, who, on July 19, received unanimous approval from the city council to lease the downtown stadium for 15 years. Lashbrook was previously Chief Operating Officer at Orlando City SC and Special Assistant to the Commissioner’s Office & Legal Counsel at Major League Soccer.
Fans will ultimately choose the name of the team, and choices have been narrowed to Las Vegas FC, Las Vegas Lights, Las Vegas Action, Viva Vegas, Club Vegas and Las Vegas Silver.
Cashman Field, opened in 1983, has played host to the Las Vegas 51’s (formerly the Stars), a AAA minor league baseball team, since its opening. The stadium features seating for 10,000 fans, and an architectural design unique in modern ballparks – the stands on either baseline are perpendicular to one another, perfect for fitting a full-sized soccer pitch.
Lashbrook will pay the expenses of converting the field for soccer.
Las Vegas joins fellow expansion clubs Nashville SC and Fresno FC for the 2018 USL season. Birmingham and Austin are slated to join in 2019.
