One stadium, six points for LA
Who would have guessed, but a cross-country trip was just what the doctor ordered for the LA Galaxy organization this weekend, as the MLS team defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 at Red Bull Arena, and LA Galaxy II beat New York Red Bulls II 2-1 at the same venue and on the same day. Both Galaxy teams entered the weekend reeling, with Curt Onalfo’s side teetering on the edge of a full-blown crisis and Mike Munoz’s team winless in six games in USL play. It may have been counterintuitive, but the doubleheader and long trip may have done just enough to clear heads and allow the players to get their teams back in the win column.
Pugh, Pugh, boom in NWSL
Mallory Pugh is the next big star of women’s soccer, and the 19-year-old phenom won’t be suiting up competitively for UCLA after all, as the NWSL announced over the weekend she’s turning pro and will play for the Washington Spirit, who could use a boost after gutting most of their roster in the offseason. Can Pugh become a dominant force immediately as a rookie with no preseason? Probably not, but considering she’s essentially a regular with the U.S. Women’s National Team already, fans have every reason to be excited about her decision to turn pro.

TFC out here racking up wins
Toronto FC have had a punishing run the last three weeks, with six MLS regular season games in that span, including two in a week in quick succession. Reason to be worried? Nope. Even with superstar Sebastian Giovinco missing most of them, TFC are on a six-game winning streak, with those wins all coming in a shocking 22-day span. As Matthew Doyle noted at MLSsoccer.com, the next-shortest six-game winning streak in the league in the last decade took 39 days to reach. This is uncharted territory, and Toronto FC may just be picking up vital points now for the Supporters’ Shield race when few people are paying attention.
