The girls then faced Barca Cantera Red for the second time and again defeated the team with a 2-0 win, advancing to the semi-final. The girls stayed strong and defeated Murrieta Surf White 0-2, advancing to the final. Clearly dominating the tournament, the final game was between two San Diego SC teams: Orange and White. A bittersweet moment, the Orange girls remained undefeated with 2-0 victory over White, earning the title of State Cup Champions.

“Although only 8 & 9 year old girls, the SDSC Girls 2007 Orange Team has a passion for soccer,” said Dawn York, Team Manager. “The girls had a very successful summer tournament winning Slammers, Presidents and Copa Del Mar and finalist at Pegasus. They then struggled finding success during the season.”

One of the great things about State Cup — no matter how you do in the season, you still have a chance to bounce back and show what your team is made of. So how did the girls bounce back?

“The girls practice hard with Coach Warren Schwitkis’ guidance after the season which prepared them for the challenging games at State Cup. They seemed to figure out a passing strategy, defensive moves and finding the back of the net.  Coach Warren kept them focused on each individual game to have the best outcome. The final game being against another SDSC was hard.  All of the girls deserved the win because of their hard work and dedication.”

“Most of the girls will be remaining on the team and are looking forward to another successful year.  The SDSC Girls 2007 Orange team is looking for a few more players for next session, preferably one with goalie experience.”

The nail biting semi final ended with a 2-2 tie against Riptide SC Black, but the boys came out victories after scoring 4 PK’s compared to Riptide’s 3. After a close call, the boys were determined to win — they shutout SCYSO FC 4-0, earning the title of State Cup Champions.

“The amount of effort and sacrifice that these boys put in to prepare for this tournament was unbelievable,” said Coach Danny Corona. “Only training twice a week we knew we had a lot of ground to cover because we were a brand new team that was going to be matched up against good teams that had already been playing together for years. I think the results speak volumes about the amount of work that these boys had to put in: for a team that only started 8 months ago, coming home with the State Cup Championship and a 4-0 win in the final is a huge accomplishment! I couldn’t be more proud of these guys!”

Girls 2007 10U NADO Soccer

NADO started off the tournament with a 2-3 loss against Hotspurs USA Red, followed by a 4-3 win over SD Surf Academy Betancourtl and then defeated Strikers FC North Black AA, 4-1. Advancing to the semi-final the girls faced Legends FC South and after a 1-1 tie, the girls moved on to the final after a gut wrenching PK round, where the girls’ 5 PK’s defeated Legends FC South’s 4. After the exciting semi final, the girls buckled down and defeated another Legends FC team (Gold), 1-0, earning the title of State Cup Champions.

“The final game was about character defensively and managing the game offensively,” said Coach Gerardo Ruiz. “We kept true to our style of playing from the back every step of the way. Although I am happy with the way this tournament turned out for us, I am even happier that if those girls keep playing when they are older they have fundamental tools that will allow them to enjoy the game for a very long time and at the end that is what its really about. I have a great group of girls that not only love the game but actually understand it and a group of parents that have understood from the get go that it would not be about winning, but developing.”
