The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team suffered a 2-1 loss to Ghana in its second of three group matches at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.
After opening up the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Paraguay, the U-17’s jumped out to a great start just five minutes into the match when Frankie Tagliaferri scored her second goal of the tournament. The U.S. won a ball at midfield and it was played to Civana Kuhlmann who played a first-time pass to Tagliaferri. She put her head down, dribbled into the box and placed a low shot into the far post. This was the second consecutive match in which Tagliaferri scored the opening goal.
After the opening goal, Ghana dictated the pace of the match and peppered the U.S. goal with 24 total shots. Ghana eventually found the right combination and in the 63rd minute, Gifty Acheampong headed home the equalizer. The goal woke the U.S. squad up and minutes later a shot from California native and captain Ashley Sanchez hit the crossbar and bounced out. Down on the other end, Ghana’s captain Sanda Owusu-Ansah converted a penalty in the 84th minute.
The U.S. and Ghana are now tied on points with three each with the U.S. holding the lead based on a +4 goal differential. The U.S. needs a result in its final match against Japan on October 8th.
In the match, California natives Kiara Pickett, Karina Rodriguez, Naomi Girma, Kate Wiesner, Kennedy Wesley, and Ashley Sanchez all saw action in the match.
