As the USWNT continues to celebrate their World Cup victory, there are two new friendly matches that have been added to their schedule for the celebration tour across the country. To add to the two friendlies scheduled for August against Costa Rica, there is a new pair of friendlies which will be against Australia in September. The games will happen in Detroit, Michigan at Ford Field on September 17th and in Birmingham, Alabama at Legion Field on the 20th.
The U.S. was in the same group as Australia in the World Cup and played their opening match against the Matildas. The game was a bit shaky for the U.S. as Australia scored the first goal early in the match, but as the game progressed, both California natives Megan Rapinoe and Christen Press were able to turn the tide and score some big goals as the game eventually ended in a 3-1 victory for the U.S.
All of the stadiums the games are taking place at are large, meaning that U.S. Soccer is aiming high with this victory tour, and so far it hasn’t been disappointing. The 10 matches the USWNT are playing until the end of the year are basically to take advantage of the high tide the team is riding right now with the recent tittle and to capitalize on their popularity as well as build momentum for the next big tournament which will be the Olympic Games in Brazil next year. Out of the 10 matches across the country, 4 have been set so far, so we should expect at least 1 friendly in California out of the 6 matches left.
