Rotterdam native and ex-FC Barcelona player Giovanni van Bronckhorst continues his soccer career as manager of Dutch team Feyenoord Rotterdam. Van Bronckhorst has taken on duty as manager in wake of the team’s recent miss of an automatic bid in next season’s Europa League.
Feyenoord’s home is the second largest city in the Netherlands – Rotterdam.
Van Bronckhorst is notable for captaining the Netherlands in its 2010 World Cup campaign, and playing for top European teams FC Barcelona and Arsenal during his career. Starting at left back with Barcelona, van Bronckhorst defeated his then previous club Arsenal in 2006 to win the UEFA Champions Final. After his three-year campaign at Barcelona, the Dutch international returned to Rotterdam to conclude his career. Van Brockhorst played with the Feyenoord youth academy and played the first years of his professional career with the club in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Feyenoord recently signed Dirk Kuyt on a one-year contract, who played for the Dutch club before his six-year career with Liverpool. Kuyt announced his retirement from international play following the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Feyenoord are looking to bring back trophies to Rotterdam as their previous European title came over ten years ago when it was still referred to as the UEFA Cup. The team finished in 4th place this season and will see van Bronckhorst take his first manager position after being the assistant of Feyenoord for the previous four years.
